The Biosafety Training Institute (BTI) at the University of Edinburgh is delighted to announce that its online “Professional Course in Biorisk Management” is now available.
This course, which is suitable for the International market, provides an excellent grounding in biosafety and biosecurity. It can also provide education and training designed to prepare candidates to demonstrate their competency via the IFBA’s Professional Certification scheme (see below).
Successful completion of this online course will result in delegates achieving a Certificate in Biorisk Management from the University of Edinburgh, validated by the University of Edinburgh at the equivalent standard to a module on a Master of Science (MSc) postgraduate course (SCQF (Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework) Level 11).
Please watch the video below for more details and to view a sample of the training course.
Registered delegates have 3 months to complete the online course, which contains six modules and an end of course assessment. To pass the course, delegates must complete all of the modules and score at least 75% in the final online exam. A summary of the modules and timings can be found here, although further time should be allowed for reading supporting documentation and revision.
A guidance framework for course fees can be found here.

IFBA Professional Certification scheme – preparation
In March 2016, the BTI at the University of Edinburgh became an Observer Organisation to the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA). The IFBA has initiated a worldwide scheme for Professional Certification (PC) in Biorisk Management. The BTI (Professional Course in Biorisk Management) course provides an excellent grounding in biosafety and biosecurity, but in addition this course provides education and training designed to prepare individual candidates to demonstrate their competency via the IFBA’s Professional Certification scheme.
The full e-learning version of the BTI course, available online from the University of Edinburgh, can facilitate ready access to these training materials, wherever the candidate may be located, with course fees adjusted to match the area of the world from which the candidates come. A guidance framework for course fees can be found here. Fee rates, based on this framework, can be discussed upon enquiry.
Please contact IFBA directly about the IFBA’s Professional Certification scheme.
